Skiing
Obertauern
January/February 2006
This skiing
vacation stood not under a good star.Already on the third day day it should
contrast with any other skiing vacation - unfortunately to our disadvantage.
Nevertheless that I was not in a
good health condition, we started Saturday morining at 2 o'clock, direction the
south. The usual traffic jam around Munich cost us an hour and reached Austria
around 11am. It was the day, the TV show „bets that… “ awaited us in Obertauern.
The motivation was high. Arrived, the first bottle sparkling wine and was opened
and we unpacked the car. Sandra's colleague Anke reported about very cold
weather in the past week. Up-to-date the temperatures were raised to - 5°C -
very much comfortable. That should not change the whole week. Exactly like
the sunshine and the blue sky. It was a dream and best conditions for a dream
vacation.
We explored Obertauern, but without
me, cause I had still this cold... And so I decided to stay in bed. Our hotel "
Latschenhof" convinced with very good service, tidy rooms and especially very
good meals. So we made a good choice. In the evening went Caro, Sascha and
Sandra to the external bet from „bets that… “, while I stayed still in bed.
On the following day unbelievable
ski conditions expected us. We rented the skies and explored the 160km skiing
area. Sandra started with ski school, it was her first day on skies. And
therefore we regularly stopped at the bear, in order to look after her. She
didn't seemed to be convinced in the evening. The "idiot's hill" wasn't so funny
and a little bit exhausting. However, that changed in the second day. The first
successful downhill rides and the feeling to be „master of the skies “ was good
for her. We tried to explore the „Tauernrunde “, that's a two hours ride around
the village of Obertauern, and started to rerecognize the several runs. The
little Schnaps-bottle stayed at home, because it did not get along with the
Paracetamol, but the fun factor was high! In the late afternoon I got a sad
phone call of Sandra: She teared her ligament in the knee. The meant the skiing
career ended for this vacation. The ski teacher of ski school "Koch" was
unfortunately a complete disaster. Instead of reacting on signals of his pupils,
that strength shrinks, he reinstructed to stand up and drive on. That was the
reason, why Sandra fell down and had this accident. It would probably not have
had to be - but it happened.
An operation in Radstadt at "Dr.
Aufmesser"-clinic followed. For us meant this shortened ski days and only a few
Aprés-Ski-parties. After two nights Sandra was back again in the hotel.and
started with her training-program in Obertauern. We diverted ourselves during
the day in wonderful weather on the runs and drank some "Jagatea" on the
numerous huts. Altogether the skiing area with its mostly simple and moderate
runs pleased us outstanding. We had a lot of fun. The huts were individual and
in sufficient number available. We recommend Obertauern! Furthermore the
Aprés-Ski offer seemed to be absolutely ok. We only went to the „Lürzer Alm “
and stopped daily at the little umbrella of the Snowwhite. We could not explore
more - unfortunately.
Despite the unfortunate
circumstances we had a beautiful time in Austria. Obertauern is a wonderful
skiing area and offers much alternation. By teh way, we met some nice people,
which I want to greet here: Susi, Rolf and Matteo as well as Dirk and Annette.
Somehow they were all from Hamburg, I don't know why. And theer was always a
reason to laugh at dinner time :-)
"Ski welfare" in Obertauern!
