Marrakech
June 2010

That was a weekend like in 1001 nights … A trip to a marvellous world – the orient.

Marrakech only in four days. That’s too short, but we haven’t made a trip to Marrakech the last time, promised. With Ryanair, we flew to Morocco. They had 40°C and a blue sky. At early evening, we arrives our destination. The Ryad Ifoulki was in the Medina, the center of oldtown. The rooms had no keys and we appreciated the wonderful atmosphere like in a family. The Ryad had only 15 rooms and three different courtyards. You choosed your place and it invited to eat, chill or heaving breakfast in one of the quiet corners. They cared perfect for us. Orange juice and the obligatory mint tea were free and could be ordered every time. From the roof top terrace you had a lovely view over the roofs of Marrakech and the Atlas mountains. Hard to believe, that you are in the city center with all the busy streets …

Only a few Stepps outside the Ryad door, you dived in the Souks. Busy streets and narrow roads invited to stroll around. I hated the motorbikes and loved the horse cars. It was wonderful, walking around and after two or three corners you lost orientation. Anyway, just the question for “big square” the people showed you the way back to Jamaa El-Fna. This is the square, where they killed people in fomer days. This place awakes at night, when the food booths open. You can listen to stories, play games, watch snakes and listen to music. The whole city was here and a view from the balcony of one of the cafés is fascinating. That’s Marrakech!

Time was short, but we saw a lot of the important places, like El-Bad palace. It is a ruin, but you can imagine, how life of the sultans was. In the Bahia palace you could see rooms with wonderful floors and lovely intarsia’s. Strolling through the Souks of herborists, you could experience the wonderful smells … You also have to make good deals on the market. Good souvenirs for less money J They offer a lot and often invite you for a mint tea

When you haven’t been in Marrakech yet, take a horse cart around the city center. Our ritual was to drink a bottle of wine on the roof top terrace every night and enjoy the view to the Kutubiya mosque at the horizon with the fog of the food booths on the Djamaa El-Fna.

Shukran, Marrakesch!
