Madeira
November 1999
The reason of this vacation
was once again a world championships in artistic cycling. This year we
explored the small island Madeira in the atlantic ocean.
The vacation started with a highlight. We landed on the sixth shortest runway of
the world, and it was the only runway I remember that had a turning-point at the
end... The island itself is wonderful, unfortunately it has no beach. The
visitor is expected a lot of steep coasts, also with the second highest cape in
the world (580m). Moreover Madeira has four climate zones, and all of this on
56km of island! What a pitty that we had some fog when we visited the 1.400m
high elevated plain Paul da Sera and the visibility was only 50m at some places,
but with some sunshine it must be very impressive up there. The island has its
own charme. Only in Funchal you can feel the tourism from time to time. The east
coast with the peninsula Sao Laurenco is very good for hiking. Directly at the
atlantic with an amazing view! I loved Madeira, even if the championships didn't
bring the success...
