Skiing Zillertal
February 2008
This was a vacation, which (we call it) emperor's wheather: lots of sun and blue sky. The Zillertal expected us with a perfect panorama and white mountains. Arriving in Austria, everything was green, like in Mayrhofen and I suspected a similar weather as 2007. But the runs were better…
Lanersbach is already 1.200 m above sealevel and had even snow. We had hope for better conditions than last year. The runs were opened to the valley. The lovely appartment Bertoni expected us and we only had to walk 50m to the gondola and the skibus stopped directly in front of our door. So everything was perfect. The skking area Eggalm had quite good ski-runs conditions. It was around 0°C and frosty snow. Unfortunately they had not seen much snow in the Alps till the beginning of December. The underground was rather icy in the afternoon and it formed heap - not very pleasant.
The ski season 2008 was opened traditionally with the filling up of the "Flachmann". In addition we had a Willi (schnaps)! While the three girls went into the ski school, the gentlemen carved down the Eggalm-runs, the Rastkogel-runs and in the skiing area Penken. It was really beautiful. Eggalm was not so busy and comfortably. Rastkogel rather ful, but wirde run. To Penken leads a panoramic run and the area is compact and varied. My new ski, called “Liquid Steel” inaugurated… After three falls on the first day, we became friends on the second day. I was now member to the “club of owners of race carving skies”. So we cheered to this in the Vogelnest. There was a cute umbrella and we hat the opportunity to rehearse the party-hits of the current season: “Joanna - you…” and “Tannenzapfen zupfen” (fir cone pull - absolutely daffy). Anyway, you can sing the song within minutes and after four Willi's you shout it out!
Then carnival came up … And there were a moose and dreadlock-Paule on the runs. Around us thousands of dutchmen!
The three girls started with ski school. But Sandras knees made trouble. On the first day in school she fell on her knee and gave up. No skiing for the rest of the vacation. Lydia and Wiebke returned on Wednesday into the group. And another breakdown. Wiebke had brought a virus in and was ill for the rest of the vacation. Thus we had 33% loss… on Thursday preferred Henning to remain and suffer beside Wiebke. 50% loss. The rest of the group still enjoyed skiing. Lydia, Brax and I explored the glacier world of the Zillertal and were enthusiastic by the panoramic view. Fantastic days and temperatures around -9°C in 3.200m height invited to ski. The disdavantage was, that we couldn't really enjoy the Aprés ski. After a view drinks, we decided to go back into our personal hospital in the appartment. Be sure, that we did not leave the Zillertal without a visiting the "Tenne". Disco Fox in ski boots - a real challenge! Everything was possible here.
Tannenzapfen zupfen in the Zillertal, Ski heil!
