Skiing Kirchberg
February 2002

Skiing - It was the first time in my life. Ok, I had a lesson in the indoor-skiarena Neuss behind me, but Kirchberg was the first in the mountains. Late in the evening we left Muenster. When we arrived in Cologne, Sabine, Thorsten and Carsten entered the bus and the party started. So we had a lot of fun on our way to Austria and arrived in Kirchberg 8am.
The professionals left the hotel at once to ski in the alps. The beginners, like Stephan and I, had a day off and so we made a hike to Kitzbuehel. On the slopes heading south wasn't very much snow, but the valley was white covered. Kitzbuehel is a lovely place. Especially the old part of the town with its coloured houses. We felt invited to start with Aprés Ski and drank a Weizen.
On the following day we started with the complete program of Ski School: five days. The first day was exhausting. The so called "Idiot's Hill" up and dow, to get the feeling for the Ski. In the afternoon I knew why they invented a Ski-Lift. It's absolutely crazy to climb up a hill for three metres to ski it down for four metres! It followed a night in the disco. The destination was called "Tiroler" and we tried to sing countrymusic from the Netherlands ;-) Back in the hotel I slept at once. On the second day of Ski-School we lifted the first time, only with a rope, but better then climb it up by yourself. I nearly had forgotten the snow-plough on top of the Gaisberg on the third day ans also the chair-lift was very comfortable. The first real downhill run. That meant 20 minutes of skiing. The view from the mountain down to the valley and the run through a forest was fascinating. Now I knew what skiing felt like. This was the sport where my friends were enthusiastic. The next day we took the Ski-Bus to the Kitzbueheler Horn. It was 2.000m above ground and I enjoyed the view over the Alps. The downhill runs were good and skiing come off by each day, also the falls were still normal. Unfortunatly I had a bad accident this day. When we practiced on a steep hill, Manuela came from behind me and hit me. We stumbled and felt down the hill. She teared her crucial ligament, thanks god, nothing happend to me. In the afternoon e made a downhill run on a red track with Juergen, our coach. Brilliant! When the lifts stopped, we enjoyed the Aprés Ski. Guest's slalom was on the morning of the enxt day, and I won it with sensational 18,2 sec. That meant the gold medal. We took the "Fleckalmbahn" up to another day in  the mountains. And I was really impressed of the mountain's view. We had blue sky and brilliant view. In the evening we made a hike to a hu and had dinner there. Good friends to calebrate with: Norbert, Bettina, Jutta, Thorsten, Sabine and Karsten. I won't forget this night. When Stephan started to make music, we had party totally. Drinking, Dancing and celebrating. Then the first day with no Ski School. I joined Sabine, Thorsten and Karsten and we run a red track - the wellknown "Streif". Certainly the family downhill run, without the black parts. It was a great feeling to stand it with no falling. After this we made a downhill run on a black track, the 23. Also with no falls. After a good meal on a hut, we took a few blue tracks and then the downhill run directly to the hotel. It followed the Ski-Christening, but no details ;-) The last days we made another detailed Ski-roundtrip through the mountain. I run the Streif once more, but felt close to the finish. At 6pm we left Kirchberg with wonderful impressions. Skiing was great and I had a lot of fun. Now I can imagine we others were so enthusiastic when they speak about it. The whole day in the fresh air, doing some sports and surrounded by fascinating nature is unbelievable! This was not my last Ski vacation, I'm sure!
